SEO is not magic and it is not fast. For a small Indian store, it is a set of unglamorous habits done consistently: writing product pages in the language people actually type, loading fast on a cheap phone, and earning a few honest mentions. Do those and Google slowly starts sending you buyers who were already looking for what you sell.
This guide is ordered roughly the way you should tackle it. You can do most of it yourself in a few hours a week. Nothing here needs an agency retainer, and anyone promising you page-one rankings in a week is selling smoke.
Write product titles the way people search
Indians rarely type in clean English. Real queries are mixed: "kurti under 500", "gym shoes size 9 price", "cotton bedsheet double bed jaipuri". Your product title and page should contain the words a buyer would actually use, including the practical details they filter by - size, colour, material, price band, use-case.
Put the most important words first. "Handloom Cotton Saree - Blue, With Blouse Piece" beats "Elegant Ethnic Wear Collection". Avoid stuffing; write one clear title, then let the description naturally repeat the terms a shopper cares about.
- Include size, colour, material and quantity where they matter
- Add the use-case: "office wear", "newborn", "festival gift"
- Write a genuine 2-3 line description - Google and buyers both read it
- Skip ALL-CAPS and marketing adjectives that nobody searches for
Give category pages a reason to exist
A category page that is just a grid of products ranks poorly. Add a short paragraph at the top or bottom explaining what the category covers, who it is for, and how to choose - for example, a "Running Shoes" page can explain flat vs cushioned soles, or a "Turmeric" page can note Lakadong vs regular.
This text targets the broader searches ("best running shoes for beginners india") that individual products can't. Keep it useful, not padded. Two honest paragraphs beat 500 words of filler.
Image alt text and file names
Google can't see your photos; it reads their alt text and file name. Name the file "red-silk-saree.jpg", not "IMG_2043.jpg", and write alt text that describes the image plainly: "Red silk saree with gold zari border". This helps image search, which drives real traffic for fashion, jewellery, home and food.
Alt text also matters for accessibility, and it is a two-minute habit once you start.
Speed on a cheap phone is your real ranking test
The vast majority of Indian shoppers are on mobile, often on patchy 4G with a mid-range phone. Google measures your real mobile load speed and uses it for ranking. A store that takes eight seconds to load loses both the sale and the ranking.
The biggest culprit is almost always heavy images. Compress them before upload, avoid auto-playing videos on the homepage, and don't pile on trackers and pop-ups. Test your own site on your phone with mobile data, not office wifi - that is what your customer feels.
- Resize images to what's actually displayed, then compress
- Keep pop-ups minimal - they hurt speed and annoy buyers
- Test with your phone on mobile data at a busy hour
Google Business Profile and local search
If you have a physical shop, salon, restaurant or clinic, a free Google Business Profile is often more valuable than any amount of on-site SEO. It puts you on Maps and in the local pack when someone nearby searches. Fill it completely: correct hours, photos, category, phone, and your website link.
Ask happy customers to leave a Google review and reply to each one. Reviews influence both ranking and whether a stranger clicks you over the shop next door. Never buy fake reviews - Google filters them and it can get your profile penalised.
Schema markup, in plain words
Schema is a bit of hidden code that tells Google exactly what a page is - this is a product, its price is ₹1,499, it's in stock, it has 4.6 stars from 40 reviews. When present, Google can show price and stars directly in search results, which lifts your click rate.
You don't need to hand-write it. Good store platforms add product, review and business schema automatically. If yours doesn't, that's a real gap worth fixing.
Building your store on Kartrocket
Most of the technical items above - clean product URLs, mobile-friendly fast pages, image alt fields, and product and business schema - should come built into your platform, not be a project you manage. Kartrocket, Shiprocket's chat-native business builder, generates a working storefront from a plain description of your business (Hinglish is fine) with these fundamentals in place.
It's free to build and free to publish on yourname.kartrocket.ai with SSL, and you can connect your own custom domain when you're ready - worth doing, since a branded domain reads as more trustworthy in search results. Checkout supports COD, UPI and cards, and shipping runs on Shiprocket, so the SEO work you do sends traffic to a store that actually converts and delivers.
Honest links, reviews, and what months 1-6 look like
Backlinks - other sites linking to you - still count, but buying them is a trap. Google detects paid link networks and penalises them, and the sellers vanish with your money. Earn links instead: get listed in genuine local directories, collaborate with a relevant blogger or local publication, or be quoted for what you actually know.
Fresh, honest content helps too - real customer reviews on product pages, a simple blog answering buyer questions ("how to measure saree blouse size"), and updated stock. Set realistic expectations: SEO compounds slowly.
- Months 1-2: fix titles, speed, images, schema; set up Google Business
- Months 3-4: Google indexes and starts ranking long-tail product searches
- Months 5-6: early rankings and reviews build; steady organic clicks begin
- Buying links or fake reviews can undo all of it - don't
